This website and associated infrastructure are hosted out of my home in Provo, Utah. New Edge Networks provides the DSL service and Computer Solutions, Inc. is my ISP. Due to poor telecommuncations infrastructure in my neighborhood, I am limited to a bandwidth of 128kbps. Sometime in the next century, I'm hoping the promise of megabit bandwidth is realized for the majority of consumers and the regional phone companies will come out of the telecommunications dark-ages.

The main purpose of the site is as a laboratory for Internet technologies. I have configured and host my own e-mail, DNS, and web services. I have also configured a firewall to protect these systems from intruders. I continue to experiment with other new applications and technologies. The network and associated services are currently being monitored by the OpenNMS Network Management Service. The Cricket tool is used for monitoring trends in network and system performance and Nessus is used to evaluate network and system security.

I use the Apache HTTP Server with the PHP module for simple server-side scripting. More advanced web application development is done in Java using Caucho's Resin for JSP and Servlet support. I use ht://Dig as the search engine. I also use the PostgreSQL database server.

The hardware used is a combination of Intel IA32-based Dell machines running RedHat Linux 7.2 with the SGI XFS journaled filesystem and an UltraSparc-based Sun machine running Solaris 8. I am using Efficent Networks SpeedStream 5871 as a router and firewall. I am also using the 3COM Home Wireless Gateway for 802.11b wireless network access from Windows-based desktop and laptop machines around my home.
