Welcome to the personal home page of Brian K. Holman.
The picture to the right represents the evolution of computing from
the abacus,
one of the first recognized computing devices, to the modern
Palm hand-held
digital computer.
I have been an early adopter of
portable computing devices from the Tandy Model 102 in the
eighties to the Apple Newton in the early nineties.
More recently, I have also been a big user of the Palm
PDAs and their wireless modem attachments for Internet
access.
Laptops, PDAs and other portable computing devices are now
common place in business and education. However,
when I was a college freshman in the fall of 1988,
people thought I was from another planet
when I ditched the yellow legal pad for my Tandy
portable during world history lectures. Needless to
say, I could type around 100 words a minutes and was
able to capture a lot more than I would have with a pen.
I think I did fairly well in the class and I had
peer's soliciting for a copy of my notes :-)
I have now seen the culmination of all of these
clunky portable devices I have put up with all these years.
The Handspring Treo is a cross between a Palm PDA, a Cell
Phone, and a Blackberry E-mail Device in the most compact and functional
design possible—a true convergence!
I'm waiting for the color version that will be available
in mid-2002. Check it out.
